Now GPS to track lapses in PDS outlets

Guntur, April 11: The district administration is planning to introduce the Global Positioning System (GPS) to the public distribution system (PDS) vehicles by the month end to prevent irregularities.

As part of the move, the officials will provide GPS antennas to the vehicles carrying PDS rice, sugar and kerosene to track their movement in the district, according to joint collector A Sarath.

Secret codes were also formulated to trace the track record of the GPS vehicles distributing the commodities to the fair price shops.

The GPS system can trace when the PDS vehicles were diverted from their scheduled routes, which would alert the revenue officials and concerned tahsildars, he said.

If the vehicle were found diverting the stock, the driver will be arrested and the lorry will be seized, he added.

The administration decided to introduce GPS to monitor the PDS distributions in the district after vigilance officials seized the diverted stock of about 442 metric tonnes of rice and 84,000 litres of kerosene last year.
