Bangalore, July 03: The Bangalore bar dancers will be soon seen in saris and chudidars if they adhere to the recent mandate by the Bangalore police.
This actually may facilitate in curbing the crime rate or may not. A few prominent citizens expressed their views on the issue.
Anita Nair, writer: “I think this is absolutely ridiculous. It is important to draw a line but not in this manner. The decision to enforce a dress code should be left to the discretion of the pub owners not the police department. They should stay away from this issue.”
According to Shakun, Vimochana, Forum for Women’s Rights “This move is totally unconstitutional and absolutely fundamentalist. Do you think women wearing saree or churidar are not exploited, mauled or raped? Whom are the city police trying to fool?”
However, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike’s Narayan Gowda welcomed the decision.
“The move by the government is a good one. I strongly feel that by enforcing a dress code there can be a slump in the crime rate.”
But fashion consultant Prasad Bidappa said “This is an outright violation of human rights. Dancing in bars is not prostitution but should be considered like any other profession. These women are doing this for their livelihood and this is a matter of dignity of labour.”
Pramod Muthalik, Chief of Shri Rama Sene: “I whole-heartedly welcome the decision. This decision favours security of bar girls.”
“Though wearing a saree will be bit uneasy but a churidar will attract less ogling. This will prevent men from going astray and in turn reduce the torture on women.”
