Non-officio EC members of 10 universities sacked

Hyderabad, April 10: A long-overdue catharsis has been enacted in 10 of the 27 universities in the State.

The state Government has, at one stroke, purged the executive councils of these universities of non-official members.

The Higher Education Department has issued GOs asking officials to discharge the functions of the ex-officio members removed from Padmavathi Mahila Viswavidyalayam, BR Ambedkar Open University, Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, Dravidian University, Andhra University, Osmania University, sri Venkateswara University, Krishnadevaraya University, Nagarjuna University and Kakatiya University.

Apart from the Principal secretary Finance, Principal Higher Education and the Collegiate Commissioner, there were on the EC members of the teaching faculty, as also those running various education societies.

The non-official members had remained in the posts taking advantage of a clause in the appointment orders that they could continue even after the expiry of their three-year term till such time as someone else was posted.

As a result, in many universities a good number of ex-officio members had stayed on in the EC for as long as five years.

The shake-up is in line with the interest being shown by Governor ESL Narasimhan, who is the Chancellor, in the running of the universities in which he is keen to see qualitative changes.
