Nokia, Vodafone tie for new internet services in India

New Delhi, June 21: Finnish giant Nokia and Vodafone Essar have come together to offer new internet services in India. Nokia enjoys numero uno status in India while Vodafone Essar is second largest GSM telecom operator in India.

Nokia is a Finnish multinational communications corporation that is headquartered in Keilaniemiin Finland. The company is engaged in the manufacturing of mobile devices and in converging Internet and communications industries, with 128,445 employees in 120 countries, sales in more than 150 countries and global annual revenue of EUR 50.7 billion and operating profit of 5.0 billion as of 2008.

Nokia is the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile telephones: its global device market share is about 37% in 2009, down from 39% in Q1 2008 and unchanged from Q4 2008.

Nokia produces mobile devices for every major market segment and protocol, including GSM, CDMA, and W-CDMA (UMTS). Nokia offers Internet services that enable people to experience music, maps, media, messaging and games. Nokia’s subsidiary Nokia Siemens Networks produces telecommunications network equipment, solutions and services.

Vodafone Essar, previously Hutchison Essar is a cellular operator in India that covers 23 telecom circles in India. Despite the official name being Vodafone Essar, its products are simply branded Vodafone. It offers both prepaid and postpaid GSM cellular phone coverage throughout India with good presence in the metros.

On February 11, 2007, Vodafone agreed to acquire the controlling interest of 67% held by Li Ka Shing Holdings in Hutch-Essar for US$11.1 billion, pipping Reliance Communications, Hinduja Group, and Essar Group, which is the owner of the remaining 33%. The whole company was valued at USD 18.8 billion. The transaction closed on May 8, 2007.

Users can update their profile, share social location with information, images and videos through the social networking sites.
