No Telangana without consensus

New Delhi, July 27: It is being widely said that the central government should itself take a decision on the Telangana issue in view of all the political parties splitting into two diagonally opposite groups. But the centre is not coming forward to assume this responsibility. It says the responsibility lies with the political parties in the state. They should all arrive at a consensus for the centre to take a decision, said union Home Minister Chidambaram.

Talking to the PTI news agency, he said the centre would not like to take a decision on the division of Andhra Pradesh and forcibly make the political parties accept it.

A unique situation is prevailing in Andhra Pradesh with regard to the Telangana issue. Major political parties Congress, TDP, CPI and CPI(M) were split into two groups. There is unanimity only in BJP which has only two MLAs and the TRS party which was founded with the soul purpose of achieving Telangana. In this situation, Chidambaram said it was not possible for the centre to take a decision and forcefully implement it.

Stating that the Congress party leader Azad was trying for a consensus among the leaders of both the regions the party, Chidambaram has suggested that the TDP should also try for a consensus among its leaders. Only then a universally acceptable decision could be taken, he added.

Admitting that the centre had made its first positive announcement for Telangana on December 9, 2009, he said the government had to amend its decision and make a fresh statement on December 23, in view of the large scale protests in other areas. He has made it clear that it would not be possible that a decision could be taken on Telangana until there was a consensus among the political leaders of different regions
