Hyderabad: Engineering seems to be losing its charm among students in Telangana as according to figures recently presented in the Rajya Sabha just half of the number of approved seats was filled during 2014 and 2016.
The number of institutes also came down from 404 in 2014 to 377 in 2016. 50 colleges opted out of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University affiliation process and many closed down from the academic year 2017-18. This will result in less number of intake. But according to industry observers this will not affect the trend of rise in number of vacant seats as less number of students is opting for technical courses.
Less job opportunities for engineers and demand for students from non-engineering fields may be the reason behind the low demand for engineering.
