No question of Aadhaar data being leaked: Government

New Delhi: There is no question of Aadhaar data being leaked, the government said told Parliament on Wednesday, after an CPI-M member cited the example of cricketer M.S. Dhoni’s details becoming public.

“Government is aggressively pushing linking Aadhaar with various government schemes and services, (but) leakage of Aadhaar data has become a serious issue. This leakage of Aadhaar data has serious implications for individual privacy and national security,” said Communist Party of India-Marxist’s (CPI-M) M.B. Rajesh in the Lok Sabha.

“Even a former Indian cricket captain’s wife has come out against the leakage of Aadhaar data recently,” he said referring to Dhoni.

Responding to the issue, Minister of State for Information Technology P.P. Choudhary however asserted that Aadhaar data cannot be leaked.

“I assure the house, steps have been taken to ensure safety of Aadhaar data. There is no question of leakage of Aadhaar data from the Aadhaar system. There is no leakage and it cannot be,” he said.

On the incident involving Dhoni, he said: “As far as Dhoni’s example is concerned, if he calls the agent home, and clicks a picture with the enrollment slip, and it is shared on social media, it is not our responsibility if the data is leaked.”
