Kakinada, February 07: Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education chairman P Jaya Prakash Rao today said they urged the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) not to sanction new engineering colleges in the state as there are already 700 engineering colleges.
Speaking to newsmen at JNTUK along with technical education principal secretary CR Biswal, he said many engineering colleges were facing shortage of faculty. The AICTE was asked to consult the respective universities before sanctioning new engineering colleges. The performance of engineering colleges under the purview of JNTUK was satisfactory, he said.
Biswal said Rs 2,000 crore was paid to engineering colleges under the fees reimbursement scheme. The government constituted a committee to oversee implementation of the scheme. G Varalakshmi, an engineering student of Hyderabad, who allegedly committed suicide unable to ‘bear’ the harassment of her college management for payment of fees, did not submit her application for scholarship in time. There was no truth in the allegation that the college management harassed her seeking payment of her fees. Stern action would be taken against the engineering colleges if they harass students for fees payment , he warned.
Earlier, Rao and Biswal inaugurated the second floor of Nagavali Hostel constructed at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore and computer sciences wing built at a cost of Rs 1 crore on the university campus.
