No more exam stress

Hyderabad, December 26: If all goes well, students appearing for the Class X and Intermediate examinations from next academic year onwards are likely to be spared from the unnecessary fear, anxiety and stress caused by the examinations.

Instead, the examinations will be reframed to strengthen their knowledge and enable them to face any examination in future with confidence.

The State government recently appointed an expert committee to suggest reforms in the SSC and Intermediate public examinations which, of late, have become a stressful affair for many students.

The expert committee, headed by the former director of National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT ) Prof Krishna Kumar, will submit its report before commencement of the next academic year in June next year. Several eminent academicians and the officials are also members of this committee which will study the examination pattern in SSC and Intermediate in detail and suggest reforms to be made to overcome the problems in the existing system.

The officials in the School Education department believe that the SS C and Intermediate examinations require major reforms as they remained rigid, bureaucratic and give importance to rote memorisation.

“These examinations fail to test thinking skills like reasoning and analysis, let alone lateral thinking, creativity and judgment. They do not serve the needs of social justice. Further, these examinations do not make any allowance for different types of learners and learning environments,”said a senior official.

The officials found that instead of instilling confidence among students, the examinations induce an inordinate level of anxiety and stress forcing some students into depression and even suicides.

“After the committee submits its report within six months, we have to study the report and also examine the feasibility of its implementation. However, we are optimistic that we will come up with a revised examination system during the next academic year,” the officials added.
