No more beauty pageants in schools and colleges: Madras HC

The Tamil Nadu schools and colleges will no longer be allowed to walk the ramp or flaunt their beauty and fashion gist because they do nothing to further a student’s education, the Madras High Court has ruled.

“It is not known as to how walking the ramp would benefit a student pursuing a course in engineering,” wondered Justice T S Sivagnanam on Tuesday, directing the government to issue a circular banning such events in colleges and universities.

The court passed the order after a petition filed by the mother of an engineering student, who was the winner of a beauty contest in “Techofes”, organised by the College of Engineering, Guindy in Chennai in February 2013, but was allegedly given a bogus certificate and also not handed over the prize assured.

The matter adjourned to May 22 for further hearing.
