No limit on SMSes to non-manual systems

New Delhi, January 26: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Wednesday removed limits on text messages to computer systems that monitor industrial processes.

TRAI had earlier placed a daily limit of 200 messages per SIM card to curb unsolicited SMSes from telemarketers.

“The authority… hereby directs all access providers to exclude from the limit of two hundred SMS per day per SIM, all machine to machine and person to machine messages, where machine is not a mobile handset and no manual intervention is required at the receiving end,” TRAI said in its order.

TRAI’s definition of “machines” includes industrial-control systems, which monitor processes in oilfields, power generators and communication systems.

Stakeholders in the decision had said the limits on SMSes had left them unable to meet operational needs, the industry regulator said.

“TRAI has duly considered such representations and has excluded all machine to machine and person to machine messages from the limit of 200 SMS per day per SIM.”

TRAI said the limits on unsolicited commercial messages would not be affected. “That’s why we have defined ‘machines’ as systems that do not need manual intervention [by the receiver],” an official said.
