Bangalore, April 29: Veteran BJP leader LK Advani on Thursday said party leaders should be above board and must not provide the Opposition an occasion to point fingers at them. He also added that no leader, regardless of the position he held, was above the party.
Inaugurating the party’s new office here, Advani said, “I feel that the BJP and BJP workers have a big responsibility on them that in the present situation our conduct should always be above board, absolutely above board. No one should be able to say that here I am committing wrong”.
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, who is facing allegation of irregularities in land deals, and host of other BJP leaders were present during the function.
Yeddyurappa completes three years in office. The Opposition Congress and the JD (S) have been consistently attacking the Yeddyurappa on the issue of corruption and land allotments.
Advani said, “Ours is not an ordinary party; ours is an extraordinary party and, therefore, any small shortcoming is highlighted more than in any other party. Another party…they can loot, indulge in so many things and get away with it; not the BJP.”
He said the BJP was “marked very carefully” and that even the smallest (of its) flaw is highlighted, and stressed the need for party men to understand this fact thoroughly. Only if one understood this, one recognises one’s responsibility. “It’s a major thing”, he said.
The former Union Home Minister remarked, “The fact that we win an election is not as important as what we do after winning an election, how well we administer it, how well we govern it,
what’s the reputation that we earn.”
