No kitchen in MP govt school, mid-day meals cooked in washroom

Damoh district, Madhya Pradesh: Raising some serious hygiene concerns, with no kitchen in a government school in Damoh District’s village of Madhya Pradesh’s, mid-day meals here are being prepared in school’s washroom for the past two months.

Two government schools in Muda village, primary and middle, running on the same premises, said people known to the situation. Meals for primary school is prepared in the old kitchen while for middle school children, it is prepared in the washroom.

Shakila, who prepares food for students said she had raised the issue but school authorities directed her to prepare the meals in the washroom. “I had cautioned them that it’s wrong but they did not listen to me,” she said.

A new building was inaugurated for the school in February, whose construction is not completed. Taking this as an excuse, school authorities blamed the contractor for not completing the building, including the kitchen shed.

“I have complained about the matter to the contractor and my seniors but there has been no solution,” said the school principal Brajesh Patel. Meanwhile, Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Hata Narayan Singh said he will send an inquiry team to the school and actions will be taken if the allegations are found to be true.
