No half-day sessions in state schools

Hyderabad, June 13: The new academic year will see an end to the practice of half-day sessions in government schools in the twin cities.

District education officials said there were over 30 schools where shift system was being followed because of lack of space to accommodate all the students in one session. But it is mandatory that schoolchildren have to spend most of their day time at school.

Incharge DEO Janardhan Reddy told Expresso that private buildings woud be hired to overcome space problem and run the schools full day. “A student should spend both morning and afternoon sessions at school but because of infrastructure problems we could not ensure the same till now,” he said.

There are many schools that offer both Telugu and Urdu media by running the school on shifts. Officials said providing alternative accommodation for such schools was a difficult task as it had serious financial implications.

The school authorities should be in a position to conduct classes for students of both media simultaneously. Already, many government schools have been functioning from private premises.

Though there are several governmentowned buildings, they are in a dilapidated condition. Some schools constructed under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) too proved insufficient. It may be noted that Hyderabad district stood last among the 23 districts in the state in the recently announced 10th class results.
