Siasat has repeatedly drawn attention of the concerned authorities regarding paltry amount of pension paid to the widows and old age persons. Inflation increased by 200% during the past 8 years but the government is still paying just Rs. 200 pm to the widows and old-aged which is insufficient to buy even one day’s ration. Government is not ready to pay attention to this serious and important matter despite the fact that Siasat called its attention several times towards the issue.
During the period of late Y.S. Rajsekhar Reddy, widows and old age persons were paid Rs. 200 and physically handicapped persons were paid Rs. 500 but even after eight years, the downtrodden and deprived section of the population is given the same amount that too after making several rounds. Nearly half of the amount is spent by the poor widows on conveyance.
A senior citizen Mohammad Imtiaz suggested that if the government really wants to benefit the deprived persons, it should follow the system adopted by Gujarati Maiman Community. This community pays Rs. 1500 pm to widows of the community, which is deposited every month in the pensioners account.
