No condom ads on television from 6am-10pm, says Centre

New Delhi: The Centre on Monday has restricted condom ads on television during the day hours, keeping in consideration the children viewers.

To comply with government rules, the ads will only be telecast between 10 pm to 6 am, according to Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, reported Deccan Herald.

The ministry’s advisory asked all TV channels “not to telecast the advertisements of condoms, which are for a particular age group and could be indecent/inappropriate for viewing by children”.

The government said its decision was based on rules stating that no advertisements which “endanger the safety of children or create in them any interest in unhealthy practices” should be allowed. It also cited regulations that prohibit “indecent, vulgar, suggestive, repulsive or offensive themes”.

The government in its AIDS prevention programme provides free condoms. While many Bollywood actors also endorse brands like Durex.
