While Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi today asserted that practicing yoga on the International Yoga Day on June 21 should not be associated with any religion, the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) decided to knock at the doors of the Supreme Court alleging compulsory insistence on reciting the Bhagwat Gita and ‘surya namaskar’.
In the backdrop of certain Muslim groups opposing surya namaskar, Ms Swaraj made no reference to any religious objections on the issue but said patients suffering from certain ailments are also advised (by doctors) not to do surya namaskar.
But she said anyone wanting to do the surya namaskar on that day was free to do so. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board said that it will move the Supreme Court against inclusion of surya namaskar and yoga in schools.
During a two-day visit to his constituency Union Home Minister Rajanth Singh clarified that there was no compulsion on doing yoga on the Yoga Day. Declaring his intention to be in Lucknow on June 21 Rajnath urged people in come out in large numbers to participate in the event along with him.
Sharing the sentiments during a press conference on the completion of one year of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government in Lucknow, Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abba Naqvi also said that yoga should be associated with good health and not with particular religion.
