Nizam College gets University Status

Nizam College which is affiliated to Osmania University has 125 years standing. It is learnt that University Grants Commission, New Delhi has decided to elevate the status of this college to University level at the end of the 12th five year plan. UGC has decided to elevate the status of 45 colleges as universities. Nizam College is the oldest college of not only Hyderabad but also of the entire State. It was established in 1887 by Nawab Safdar Jung Musheeruddowla Fakhrul Mulk. Its original name was “Asad Bagh”. Its first Principal was Mr. Aghornath Chatopadhyay ,father of Ms. Sarojini Naidu. It was affiliated to University of Madras for 60 years since Osmania University was not established at the time of inception of this college. It was affiliated to Osmania University on 19th February 1947.

Many noted leaders and luminaries were the students of this college. Some of them are: The Nightingale of India, Ms. Sarojini Naidu, PV Narasimha Rao, Dr. Syed Abid Husain, Dr. Ch. Hanumanth Rao, Dr. Ali Mohammed Khusro, Mr. S.B. Chavan, Mr. Zaheer Ahmed, Mohammed Azharuddin ( Cricket Captain), Mr. Shyam Benegal (Film Director) etc. NAAC has accredited it A grade. It also has the college of potential excellence status. At present Nizam College offers degree and PG courses in 29 departments. The present Principal of Nizam College, Prof. TLN Swamy told that more than 10, 000 students are getting education in this college which includes more than 1000 foreign students. Got of A.P. has identified Nizam College to establish Center for Educational Development of Minorities where coaching is offered to minority candidates to prepare them for various competitive examinations. Various Educationists and the staff of Osmania University and Nizam College are feeling happy that this old college is being elevated to the status of a full-fledged University.
