Nirbhaya’s parents urge Mayor to use her real name for museum

New Delhi: Parents of Rape victim, December 16, requested to use their daughter’s real name for science museum which was named after her when they met south Delhi Mayor Shyam Sharma at the Civic Centre on Wednesday.

According to DNA, Badri Nath Singh and Asha Devi Nirbhaya’s parents requested that the name of the Nirbhaya Science Museum should have real name of their daughter because she didn’t do any crime.

“We want the real name of our daughter to be revealed. We cannot get her back in our lives but, at least, this memory will survive and people will remember her. Her name should not be concealed because she did not commit any crime,” Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi told DNA.

The name Nirbhaya is used for the science museum in south Delhi’s RK Puram in 2013 in respect to the physiotherapy student who was savagely raped in a bus and succumbed to her injuries. Her parents gave a letter also.

“She was a citizen of this country. Had she been alive, she would have served the people as a doctor. This would send out a strong message to the society,” Devi said adding that the Mayor assured them of action.

“Young girls and boys and grown-up people visit this museum. Her name will remind people of the condition of women in this country and perhaps will help them become more conscientious. I do not know if there is any legal complication involved in putting up her real name, but we are fine with it. We would also like to put up her photograph there. We are not ashamed. The criminals should be ashamed,” Singh said in a statement.

During the meeting, Sharma told them that a board carrying Nirbhaya’s name has been installed and the corporation has taken all steps to make it a useful centre of learning.
