Nine suicides by students in first 7 days of 2010

Mumbai, January 08: Anand Prakshale, 22, had twice failed in the higher secondary board examinations. He was to make his third attempt in February, appearing as a private student. But the fear of failing again, perhaps, had eroded him from the inside. On Wednesday night, Anand allegedly took the easy way out. He hanged himself to death at his home in Bhayander (East).

Vrushali Kale, 18, committed suicide in the hostel of a nursing college in Ambegaon near Pune. “Sorry Mamma, Papa. I could not fulfil your expectations,” she wrote to her parents before taking the drastic step on Wednesday.

Just seven days have gone by in the new year, and nine students in the state have committed suicide. With counsellors working overtime in schools and colleges, and parents taking extra care not to hurt kids’ sensitivity, one hopes that this sudden spurt in hara kiri would end soon.

Anand was found hanging from the ceiling of his home — B-106, Nav Kuber Building, Navghar Cross Road No 5. He lived with his parents and brother. His father told the police that he had been depressed for the past few days. Perhaps he could not bear the thought of flunking the exams for a third time, he said.

Anand was home alone on Wednesday evening, constable RD Patil, who is in charge of investigating the case, said. He went into his bedroom, and using the window curtains, hanged himself from the ceiling.

Assistant inspector PN Khedekar said, “We have called his friends to get details about him. There could be a love angle as we have come to know that he had a girlfriend.”

Vrushali was studying in the first year of the auxiliary nursing midwife course at Chandrakant Yashwantrao Dangat Patil College. Her father was a labourer and her mother, a nurse at a Nanded hospital.

Satish Patil, senior inspector of Haveli police station, said the suicide note she left for her parents stated that she was not prepared for her exams which were to begin on Monday.

On Wednesday, Vrushali had gone for her practical session at
Sonawane Hospital. Coming back to the hostel, she had her lunch, and went to her room complaining of a headache.

In the evening, when she did not come out, her friends informed hostel rector Kavita Thopate. The latter and her husband broke open the door to Vrushali’s room, and found her hanging from the ceiling.

Techie kills self: A 34-year-old IT engineer allegedly committed suicide at his Kanjurmarg residence on Wednesday by hanging himself from the ceiling. Senior inspector RS Vakale said, “Dnyaneshwar Naik returned home early from work on Wednesday.

His wife, who too is an IT engineer, came home at 6:30 pm. Despite repeated knocks on the door, Naik did not respond. She called up her brother, and broke open the door to find him hanging from the ceiling.”
