Nine killed in two suicide attacks in Kabul

Two suicide bombings rocked Afghan capital Kabul Thursday claiming nine lives, including those of the two attackers, and injured 31 others, officials said.

In the latest deadly attack which occurred at 5.20 p.m. Thursday, two persons, including the bomber, were killed and 20 others sustained injuries, Xinhua reported citing Kabul police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi.

The blast occurred while hundreds of people gathered at the hall of the French cultural centre in the French built high school, Istiqlal Lycee, in downtown Kabul.

Istiqlal Lycee is located next to the Arg or Presidential Palace, the foreign ministry and the fortified Kabul Serena Hotel where security cameras are installed.

“One person was killed and some 20 others sustained injuries in the suicide attack,” Rahimi told reporters here.

The attacker was also killed in the blast, the Kabul police chief said, adding that the bomber was a teenager, probably 16 or 17 years old, who hid himself among the onlookers.

The blast happened while hundreds of people were watching a theatrical show titled “Heart beat: The silence after explosion” at the hall of the school, aimed at expressing hatred for militancy and condemning suicide bombings which claim the lives of people in the conflict-ridden country.

The person killed in the blast, according to some sources, is a foreigner. However, officials have yet to identify the victim.

Kabul police chief Rahimi said more details will be made public after investigation.

In the previous attack which targeted a bus of Afghan national army and for which the Taliban claimed responsibility, seven persons, including the attacker and six personnel of the Afghan national army, were killed and 11 others injured.

According to a defence ministry statement, the attack took place in Tangi Tarakhil area, Xinhua reported.
