Sitapur (UP), Jun 06: Nine people died and several fell ill and hospitalised due to suspected food poisoning in Resua block here, officials said today.
The deaths occurred since Friday night probably due to consumption of contaminated food, Chief Medical Officer Vijay Verma said.
All the victims, residents of Semra, Dalpatpur and other villages, had attended a marriage function, an official said.
Some people were still being treated at the district hospital and at a primary health centre.
Locals, however, alleged the deaths took place due to diarrhoea.
