Nine die in UP due to cold

Lucknow, January 07: As many as nine persons died due to the cold in Uttar Pradesh, where intense chill continued to prevail in many parts of the state, official sources said here today.

Two persons each died due to the cold in Ghazipur, Etwah and Ballia and one death each was reported from Auraiya, Basti and Maharajganj, sources said, adding the death toll this winter has touched 180.

Meerut, which had a low of 3.4 degree celsius, two notches below normal, was the coldest place in the state, followed by Shahjahanpur, where the mercury settled at 3.5 degrees, the Met office said.

The state capital recorded a minimum temperature of 3.8 degrees, three marks below normal, they said.

In Kanpur, the low was recorded at 4.4 degrees, four degrees below normal.

Gorakhpur saw the mercury settle at 5.
