NIMS wall collapse causes panic

Hyderabad, July 21: A couple of two-wheelers were damaged after a portion of the wall near the upcoming Specialty Hospital and Accident (trauma and emergency) wing within the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Punjagutta, collapsed on Monday. A youngster suffered minor injuries.

It was around 4.50 pm when the compound wall adjacent to Balapuram Basti, suddenly collapsed creating panic among the locals. Though initially there was a rumour that some people were buried in the debris, it later came to light that a couple of twowheelers parked near the wall were damaged when debris fell on it.

Though only a portion of the wall collapsed, the other damaged portion remained still as an electric pole and a bunch of cable wires prevented it from falling.

“I just put the clothes for drying along the wall and returned to the house along with my granddaughter when the wall collapsed. Had we hung around there an extra second, we would have been no more,” said a resident O Bharathi.

A Saideep, an Intermediate student of New Vision College suffered a minor injury, when a portion of the rubble fell on his feet. “I returned from the college and was about to enter the house. I immediately moved aside on seeing the wall collapsing,” he said.

Locals said that the reason for the wall collapse was the sand that was dumped along it by hospital authorities.
