NIA to probe murder of Samjhauta bomber Sunil Joshi

New Delhi, January 13: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) “will eventually” probe the killing of one of the bombers of Samjhauta Express, Sunil Joshi as the ongoing investigation points at enough evidence linking his death with the Hindu radicals who were “directly or indirectly” involved in a number of terror attacks during 2006-08. Joshi was mysteriously murdered outside his house in Dewas in December 2007.

Though Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan had recently ruled out handing over the case to NIA, officials here indicated that “the central probe agency will eventually probe it” by taking it up suo motu considering the “terror angle” behind Joshi’s murder.

“Had his killing not been linked with the terror cases, the issue of NIA taking up the case would not have even be discussed,” said an official. The revelation comes at a time when the NIA, CBI, Maharashtra and Rajasthan police have been looking for 10 to 15 Hindu radicals for their “direct or indirect” role in the terror incidents.

While NIA is probing the blasts in the Samjhauta Express train and at Modasa in Gujarat, the CBI has the Mecca Masjid case. On the other hand, the Ajmer dargah blast case probe is with the Rajasthan police while the Maharashtra ATS had probed the Malegaon blast cases.

“All the agencies have been coordinating with each other in their respective probes as footprints of the accused appear to be everywhere linking them with many incidents, specifically the blasts in Malegaon (2006 and 2008), Samjhauta, Ajmer, Modasa and Mecca Masjid ( Hyderabad),” said an official.
