NHRC to hear issue of Salandi river project on Mar 21

New Delhi, March 19: The NHRC will on Monday hear the matter of alleged human rights violation and eviction of people from their land for implementing the Salandi river redevelopment project in Orissa.

The National Human Rights Commission has noted that the state government has received the socio-economic survey report for Salandi Sanskar project and asked it to file its response before the scheduled hearing.

“It is reported that for implementing Salandi Sanskar project, several persons have been evicted from their land and houses…the government is requested to see whether any other persons are also affected by this project…if it be so, whether any compensation has been awarded to them,” the rights panel said in a communication to the Orissa Chief Secretary.

It had last month allowed the complainant, lawyer R K Tripathi, to furnish the details of the affected persons to the government of Orissa.
