Hyderabad, October 13: A newly-wed couple, who married against the wishes of their parents, tried to end their lives by jumping into the Hussain Sagar on Tuesday but were rescued by police. The Lake police who guard the reservoir and its surroundings, noticed the couple leap into the waters and rescued them.
Police said the couple felt guilty of putting the honour of their families at stake with their marriage and tried to end their lives.
Ramgopalpet police said the couple are 23-year-old Ravikanth from Karkhana and 20-year-old Ramya from Borabanda. “They were in love but their parents were against the marriage. On Sunday, the duo went to Vijayawada and got married. But after getting married, they both felt guilty of putting their families’ honour at stake,’’ police said.
“After landing in the city on Tuesday morning, they went straight to the Hussain Sagar and jumped into the waters, fearing to go to their houses. In fact both are cousins,’’ Ramgopalpet police sub-inspector Prashanth said. Ravikanth was doing a petty job in the ICICI Bank while Ramya is pursuing her graduation.
Both families were called to the police station and the couple were counselled. No cases were registered keeping in view the couple’s future, police said.
