Newly-wed couple escape as car falls into lake

Mysore, February 27: A newly-wed couple from Bijapur had a miraculous escape when their car plunged into Undabathi lake along Mysore-Nanjangud road today.

Police said the couple Suryakanth and Ranjini, who were on their honeymoon were travelling to Ooty. When the husband who was driving the car, attempted to overtake a speeding lorry near the lake, the car veered to the right, going off the road and fell into the lake.

One of the stone pillars erected along the barricade was uprooted and dragged along with the speeding car, which fell into the lake and was partially submerged in the water.

In December last, disaster struck a marriage party when a mini bus fell into the same lake killing 31 people, mostly women and children.

Following that incident, the road was repaired and made free of potholes. Short stone pillars painted in white were erected along the road next to the lake. Though the deputy commissioner had assured to install steel railings along the lake border, it has not been done so far.
