New species discovered in `lost world` in Oz

Researchers claimed to have made the “discovery of a lifetime” in Cape York in Queensland, Australia, with the finding of a lost world of unknown creatures in a previously unexplored rainforest.

A team of scientists, led by Dr. Conrad Hoskin of James Cook University and Harvard University researcher Dr. Tim Laman, found the new species in a rainforest which is surrounded by massive walls of boulders around the base of Cape Melville, News.com.au reported.

The researchers found three new species, including a leaf-tailed gecko, a golden-coloured skink, and a boulder-dwelling frog, that were previously unknown to science.

Hoskin said the top of Cape Melville is a lost world and the three new vertebrates have been isolated there for millennia, evolving into distinct species in their unique rocky environment.
