New no. plates to cost a bomb?

Hyderabad, October 13: By November 20, vehicle-owners in the city will know the price they have to pay for high security registration plates (HSNP). The AP State Road Transport Corporation has taken the first step to comply with the Supreme Court order on the number plates for automobiles by floating tenders.

The apex court came down heavily on various states, including Andhra Pradesh, for not taking initiative in implementation of HSNP. Later, the sate government gave a written undertaking to the apex court expressing its commitment to implement HSNP.

The price tag for each number plate ranges between Rs 500 and 1800 in West Bengal, Sikkim, Meghalaya and Goa that started implementing the order from January this year.

”Three months ago, an RTC official went to Kolkata to study implementation of HSNP there. The West Bengal government is offering the high-security plates at Rs 500 for four-wheelers and much lower price for two-wheelers,” RTC special officer (Projects) T Srinivas told to media.

APSRTC officials said that the bidder was expected to supply two crore HSNPs in two years from the date of execution of the development agreement. However, the officials said that the price at which the HSNP would be sold to motorists could be decided by November 20 based on the bidding amount filed by the successful company. It is learnt that 18 companies across India have experience in dealing with HSNP.

Officials said that there were various components- supply of plates, emboss equipment and others- in the whole bidding process. Since the APSRTC officials were not experienced in dealing with HSNP, tenders have been called for providing skilled and semi-skilled manpower.
