New facility for special kids soon

Hyderabad, January 05: A building to house a training and production centre, hostels for boys and girls and an administrative office for the AP Vikalangula Cooperative Corporation will come up at Nalgonda crossroads at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy said.

The building will be in two blocks of three storey each in an area of 41,348 sq feet. The government has taken up the project after 2.43 acres of land was acquired from the APVCC for the flyover at Nalgonda crossroads.

Speaking at the 202nd birth anniversary of Louis Braille orgaised by the APVCC, he said the government has extended full support to the differently abled and hiked the allowance paid to mentally and physically challenged persons from Rs 75 per month to Rs 500.

Responding to pleas made by the APVCC chairman Maddela Ganga Ram for increasing the quota in employment and education for physically challenged persons on par with SC/STs and a hike in the Disabled Commissionerate budget from Rs 31 crore to Rs 50 crore, the chief minister said he would consider the demands sympathetically. He said he would create a special cell to speed up special programmes for differently abled.

Kiran Kumar Reddy asked the APVCC representatives to get back to him with proposals and statistics about the number of differently abled persons in the state. He said they could present the figures and proposals to him at a meeting which he proposed to hold within the next 15 to 30 days.

Earlier, the chief minister unveiled the statue of Louise Braille at the Nalgonda crossroads and named the flyover after him. He also presented mementos to physically challenged students for their achievements.
