New embroidery designs in market soon

Hyderabad, March 29: Better and newer designs in embroidery will come out in the twin cities in the days to come. The craft is in for technology up-gradation as artisans engaged in the trade are getting their skills improved.

The A.P. Handicrafts Development Corporation began a six-month-long course on Monday to further hone the skills of the 2,500 women working in the zari and zardosi trade, mostly in old city.

The artisans, who comprise 143 self-help groups, will be trained by master designer, Rajeh Surniganti.

The Integrated Design and Technical Development Project is being sponsored by Development Commissioner, Handicrafts, with a financial support of Rs. 10 lakh.

The artisans will be trained mostly in surface texture and its variants. Different kinds of materials like chamki, beads and artificial silk thread will be tried out.

“A design bank containing at least 2,500 new textures will be developed. These can be used on sarees, shalwar-khamees or bags”, said Mr. Rajesh.

Y. Madhusudana Reddy, Managing Director, A.P. Handicrafts Development Corporation, said old designs in embroidery are continuing for years limiting the scope and expansion of the trade. Once the artisans equip themselves with new skills, their income levels will double, he said.

S.A. Razzack, Assistant Director, Handicrafts Development Corporation, said a market survey will be made to ascertain the fashion trends and accordingly the artisans will be trained in new designs.
