We never opposed ‘Udta Punjab’: Punjab

Punjab: The Punjab government on Tuesday said it has never opposed the film “Udta Punjab” and that the controversy relating to it was between the Central Board of Film Certification and the film’s makers.

“I have no comment. Punjab government have never opposed ‘Udta Punjab’. It (the controversy) is between the CBFC and the makers of the film,” said Punjab Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa in response to a query on the issue.

Dhindsa, who was here for the meeting of the Empowered Committee of state finance ministers on GST, said he had not seen the film and was in no position to say how the director portrayed Punjab in the movie.

“I will be able to make comment after seeing the movie. CFBC have seen it and they will be in a position to make comment,” he said.

The CBFC at one point demanded 89 cuts in the film, but its Revising Committee later brought down the number to 13 on June 6.

Unequivocally upholding the freedom of creative expression, the Bombay High Court on Monday overruled the CBFC-recommended 13 cuts and cleared it for release with one cut and three disclaimers by the filmmakers.
