Need to prevent child marriage & teenage pregnancy stressed

A research dissemination meeting on “Tackling child marriage and early child birth in India: lessons from Young Lives” was held today by Young Lives India, in association with Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) and Sri Padmavati Mahila Vishva Vidyalay (SPMVV) at CESS here, which elaborated the causes and precautions to abort child marriages.

           

The key findings from the policy brief are: Some 28% of the girls are getting married before attaining 18 years age, whereas in the case of boys it is 1%. Some 59% of the girls are becoming mothers by the age of 19. Parents’ educational background is a deciding factor and the downtrodden girls were becoming victims all times.

           

The meeting brought together experts, academics and policy-makers working on issues of gender, youth and adolescence specifically on early marriages and proposed recommendations in the context of policy implementation for reducing early marriage, teenage pregnancy and intends to strengthen adolescent reproductive health and well-being in India.
