Rukn ud Daula Lake is located opposite to Meer Aalam Tank, near National Police Academy, Hasan Nagar, Hyderabad. It was constructed by Nawab Mir Moosa Khan Rukn ud Daula, prime minister of Asaf Jah II, in 1765. This fact is unknown to most of the people that this lake was constructed in the shape of Urdu alphapet ‘Bay’ which is the short form of ‘Aab’ meaning water.
The Rukn ud Daula Lake has its own importance and history. The water from this lake was used for drinking by the Nizam’s kings and their family who lived in Chowmahalla Palace. The water was filled in barrels which were carried to the Royal house on bull carts after it was sealed in the presence of Daruga (officer in charge for the inspection of food for the Royal families and their guests).
Earlier the lake used to be full, round the year, but today little water can be seen in rainy season only. The reason is that the lake is surrounded by the buildings from all sides due to which all the ways from which the water used to come have been blocked. It has also been surrounded by trees and plants. The garbage, trash, debris etc are being dumped in it so that land grabbers may one day succeed in their plans, which is a matter of concern.
It has been reported by reliable sources that people involved in this conspircary are none other than the people of our own community.
If the miscreants succeed in their consiparcy then the Shahi Lake which used to quench the thirst of Asaf Jahi Sultans will remain in the books only. Hence the authorities are requested to immediately take action and ensure protection of Shahi lake and make it a recreational centre by transforming the land surrounding the lake into a park and also install a board mentioning the history of the lake so that the new generation may come to know their history.
