NDMA to set up cyclone training centre

Hyderabad, November 08: The National Disaster Management Authority is keen to set up a cyclone training centre at Gannavaram, near Vijayawada, in Krishna district soon to provide training and alert farmers on latest weather reports, NMDA member and MLA Marri Shashidhar Reddy has said.

Speaking at a seminar on disaster management organised by Acharya NG Ranga Foundation here today on the occasion of the late leader’s 111th birth anniversary, Reddy said that the NMDA would set up the centre if the government provided the needed land.

He said the NMDA allocated `176 crore to each state for projects to cope with disaster situations. “The NMDA will sanction at least `500 crore for southern states to set up more cyclone centres to educate people on disaster threats during monsoon,’’ he added.

Requesting the media to maintain restraint in reporting news, he said that for the past week, media had disseminated false news in the name of latest updates on cyclone and created panic in people.

Minister for rural development Vatti Vasantha Kumar, minister for agriculture N Raghuveera Reddy, former minister Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao and PCC spokesman N Tulasi Reddy were present.
