NCP should heed to suggestion of merger with Cong: Deshmukh

Ahmednagar, August 17: The NCP should heed to suggestions for merger with Congress, Union Minister and senior Congress leader Vilasrao Deshmukh has said.

“NCP should heed to the suggestion for merger with Congress. There is no point haggling over issues like whether to have alliance (with Congress) and over the number of seats to be contested,” the senior Congress leader told reporters after a function here yesterday.

Referring to AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh’s remark that NCP should consider merging with Congress, Deshmukh, Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, said he will “very happy if such a development takes place.”

“I will be very happy if such a development takes place and it would be a welcome step,” Deshmukh, who has been a vociferous proponent of Congress going it solo in state elections, said.

Digvijay Singh, during his tour of Western Maharashtra recently, had said the rationale for NCP’s existence is no longer valid.

“As the reason over which NCP was formed no longer exists, it is now upto the leadership of both the parties to take a call on the matter,” Singh had said.
