New Delhi: Minority Affairs Minister, Mr. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi informed Lok Sabha that the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) has granted ‘minority status’ to 1355 education institutions.
According to the report published in Times of India, the minister has also disclosed that more than 26.45 lakh students belonging to minority communities got enrolled in higher education.
Giving details of financial assistance provided to institutions, Mr. Naqvi said that Scheme for Providing Quality Education in Madarsas (SPQEM) and Infrastructure Development in Minority Institutions (IDMI) were being implemented.
It was also informed that for the purpose of residential coaching academy for minorities, women and SCs/STs, University Grants Commission (UGC) has provided Rs. 85 lakh and Rs. 65 lakh to Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI) and Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) respectively.
The minister also said that under Maulana Azad National Fellowship scheme, 1000 selected candidates belonging to minority communities are provided financial support for the purpose of MPhil/PhD research.
