‘NATO operating as military arm of US imperialism’

An American political analyst says NATO is “the military arm of imperialism,” spreading terrorism and oppression across the world.

“I say terrorism because if you look at the tens of thousands that were killed in Libya by the NATO bombing, or in former Yugoslavia, or with the drone attacks, or the myriad attacks and wars around the world, it’s sheer terror,” the International Action Center’s John Parker told Press TV from Chicago, where protests are being held ahead of the NATO summit.

Parker condemned the military alliance’s activities across the world, saying the thousands of US taxpayer dollars being spent on it by the administration of US President Barack Obama to secure its presence in Afghanistan, could be used on improving living conditions in the US.

High military spending comes as the country’s middle class is being subjected to cuts in the education and healthcare systems.

“Here in Chicago where we’re at, there’s 50 percent unemployment for African-American youth, and it’s intolerable.”

Thousands of protesters from across the United States have gathered in Chicago ahead of the May 21-22 NATO summit, when representatives from 60 countries are scheduled to meet to discuss several issues, especially the war in Afghanistan.

Nearly two dozen peaceful anti-NATO protesters have already been arrested over the past weeks.
