NATO hits military target in Tripoli

Washington, April 28: A loud explosion was heard after NATO fighter jets flew over Tripoli. Large plumes of smoke could also be seen above the areas struck by the rockets, Xinhua news agency reported.

The NATO air strike comes as a political analyst says NATO’s military campaign in Libya is serving the interests of member states of the Western military alliance and not those of the Libyan people.

“I think it [NATO’s aerial campaign] is working but according to the wishes and interests of the leading countries of the NATO, specifically the US, Britain, France, and lately Italy. It sounds very much like a colonial operation really,” said writer and journalist Adel Lofty in an interview with Press TV on Wednesday.

Recounting the economic interests of the Western alliance countries, Lofty said that NATO member states can win lucrative deals when the bombings come to an end in Libya.

“Destroying Gaddafi’s air force or tanks is just a means [for the member states] to get deals for replacement of these airplanes, tanks and weapons as well as the civil infrastructure which has been destroyed mainly by Gaddafi,” Lofty said.

He pointed out that a ceasefire should not be an option for the opposition forces as it “would mean that Gaddafi must stay in power and they [revolutionaries] will not get what they wanted and what the Libyan people in the rest of the country wish for as well.”

Lofty also rejected the idea that international diplomacy with Gaddafi’s regime can be a possible solution to the current situation in Libya

“That would be a disaster, to be honest, and the revolutionaries do not want to stop fighting because they prefer to be killed seeking democracy and freedom than be killed in retaliation by Gaddafi,” the journalist said.
