A three-day 8th National Seed Congress will be conducted at HICC here from October 27 to 29, Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy has said. The State government is conducting the event in order to translate its idea of making the State a seed bowl of India and overcome agriculture related issues, he added.
Addressing the media at Secretariat here, Pocharam said the Seed Congress would focus on the present scenario of agriculture at national level, challenges and future needs for seed. Some 500 to 600 delegates, including researchers, scientists, stakeholders and farmers will attend the event, he said. He also said the platform will formulate new guidelines to meet growing food demands and cater to the needs of farmers with a focus on new hybrids, he remarked.
The minister said Rs 50 crore will be spent on seed production program and as many as 36,480 farmers will get 14,580 hectare under the Seed Village program. Rs 9 crore was allotted to bring under cultivation 1,176 hectare under Agriculture University purview, but it was neglected by the previous governments. Some 400 seed companies in the State were producing a wide gamut of seed worth Rs 45,000 crore every year, he said, adding that the government would take all steps to improve godown facility to provide support price to the farmers.
