National level athletes with no tickets, forced to sleep on train floor

New Delhi: Around thirty athletes were forced to sleep on train floor, near toilets as they had only two confirmed tickets for their long journey.

The pathetic condition of Indian sports could be again highlighted when an athlete, Pradeep Atri, shot a video that surfaced on Facebook.

In the video, he showed how his fellow athletes were facing difficulties during a 30-hour long journey from Vijayawada to Delhi.

After concluding Junior National Athletics Championship on November 20, the thirty athletes were on their way back with only two confirmed tickets, reported The Indian Express.

It is a fact that not even once we’ve had confirmed seats during our Nationals, an athlete said.

About 120 athletes had taken part in the four-day Championship. However, most of them travelled on their own expenses to avoid the usual humiliation which Indian athletes suffer during their tournaments.

Delhi Athletics Association secretary Sandeep Mehta tried to defend the association and blamed the deferral of the championship, that was re-scheduled to November 16 from November 10.
