National executive meet: Gowda hints at discussion on Giriraj’s racist remark

Union Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda on Thursday said that his party colleague Giriraj Singh’s racist remark against Congress president Sonia Gandhi might be discussed in the BJP’s national executive meet in Bengaluru.

“The national executive meeting is going on… if this is indiscipline then we might as well discuss this matter,” he said.

The BJP, however, earlier in the day sought to play down Giriraj Singh’s controversial statement against the Congress president.

“The minister has expressed his regrets. There is no need to make an issue of it,” said BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain.

Meanwhile, Gowda said the BJP’s national executive meet in Bengaluru holds special importance as it was the first since the NDA Government came to power.

“This national executive meeting has some special importance. It is the first national executive meet since we came to power,” he said.

The three-day meeting, which would also be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, would discuss and formulate ways to strengthen the party’s base in the southern states, Assam, West Bengal and Odisha.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the meet on Friday.

The Prime Minister is expected to highlight the achievements of his government and also talk about New Delhi’s improved relationship with the neighbouring countries.

The session began earlier today in the presence of the party’s top leaders, including BJP chief Amit Shah, veterans L.K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, Union Ministers and BJP chief ministers. (ANI)
