NASA which opened its doors on October 1, 1958, turned 60. It has done more than just putting a man on the moon. The space agency has marked the diamond anniversary.
Over the last 60 years, The pace agency made several inventions which have improved life on Earth, here are the inventions you likely wouldn’t have if the space agency didn’t exist.
- Nike Air Shoes: These shoes were first pitched by a NASA engineer. Nike and co-founder Phil Knight took the pitch, and the rest is history
- Foil Blankets: First developed by NASA as a lightweight insulator, these sheets protect against extreme temperatures
- Dust Busters: Wondering how the handheld vacuum came about? NASA originally designed the tech to collect samples on the moon
- Wireless Headphones: NASA had to come up with a solution to allow astronauts to move and communicate hands-free
- Baby Formula: While exploring the use of algae for extended space travel, NASA discovered a nutritional enrichment ingredient that’s now used in these formulas
- Water Purification System: In 1960 NASA created an electrolytic silver iodizer to purify astronauts drinking water
- Artificial Limbs: NASA’s innovations into shock absorption materials are being adapted to create more functionally dynamic artificial limbs
- Ear Thermometers: NASA along with Diatek developed an aural thermometer which measures the amount of energy emitted by the eardrum
- Camera Phones: in 1990 a team of NASA worked to create cameras small enough to fit on spacecraft
