NaMo TV: EC seeks clarification from I&B ministry

Taking cognizance of the launch of NaMo TV ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission sought a report from the ministry of information and broadcasting. Responding to it, the ministry of information and broadcasting has told the Election Commission that NaMo TV is not a licensed channel but a direct-to-home advertisement platform.

NaMo TV was launched on March 31. It is a 24-hour TV channel broadcasting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election campaigns.

As reported by India Today, besides I&B Ministry, the Election Commission had also written to Doordarshan asking them how it ran an hour-long live broadcast of PM Modi’s public address ‘Main bhi chowkidaar’ on March 31.

NaMo TV which is named after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with his picture in its logo, runs live broadcast of PM’s rallies and also streams compilations of his speeches ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The matter was also raised by the Congress and AAP with the EC asking why was such a channel launched after the model code of conduct came into force.
