Writer and Sahithya Akademi Award recipient, Dr. M. Chidananda Murthy has opposed the reported plan of naming a university to be set up in Kolar district, after Tipu Sultan, here on May 12.
Addressing the press persons, Dr. Murthy said that, recently the Tipu Sultan United Front (TSUF) insisted that the government should name the new university after Tipu Sultan.
Mr. K Rahman Khan, union minister for Minorities Affairs, had also stated that one of the five universities intended to be set up by the Centre in Kolar district would be named after Tipu Sultan.
Mr. Murthy and his team had carried out a research on the Muslim monarch who ruled from the period 1750 to 1799 in the State, disapproved of the plan saying that Tipu was anti-Hindu, anti-Kannada and a communalist, instead he suggested to name the university after famous personalities like Sufi saint or former President A P J Abdul Kalam.
Giving yet another reason, Dr. Murthy said that the Muslim ruler got rid of people who refused to convert to Islam during his reign. “It will be unfair if the university is named after him and a disgrace for those who study there”, he argued.
Mentioning a few examples from works of historians, Dr. Murthy said he was not against the Muslim community, however he was not in favour of naming the university after Tipu Sultan.Courtesy:Karnataka muslims
