Even as several BJP leaders are demanding a new, “stricter” anti-conversion law in the wake of controversies triggered by some Hindutva groups’ “reconversion (ghar vapsi)” programmes. The Minority affairs minister Najma Heptulla today said existing laws are enough to deal with conversions by force or inducement.
Asked about her views on an anti-conversion law, Ms. Heptulla said “There are already so many laws in the country and the existing laws are enough to deal with it (conversion).
She stood second after Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Paswan had taken a similar line yesterday, ruling out the need for a new anti-conversion law.
When asked whether she had taken up the issue of conversions with Modi, Najma said: “I cannot tell you everything about my discussion with the Prime Minister.”
