Nagaland Congress asks for rescheduling by-poll

Kohima, April 01: Nagaland Pradesh Congress has urged the Election Commission to reschedule the by-election to Aonglenden constituency in Mokokchung district saying the announced date being a Sunday would be inconvenient for the voters.

The by-poll in the prestigious constituency, long represented by former chief minister S C Jamir, has been scheduled for May 8 following the death of Congress MLA Nungshijungba Longkuler last year.

NPCC President S I Jamir in a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi said that Nagaland being a Christian majority state no major activities are taken up on Sunday in the state and requested the Election Commission to reschedule the polling day to a week day.

Meanwhile, both ruling Naga Peoples Front and opposition Congress have said they are yet to take a final decision on their respective candidates although both parties confirmed that they had received applications from ticket seekers.
