Myanmar maid charged with Indian-origin woman’s murder

Singapore City: A Myanmarese maid in Singapore was charged on Wednesday with the murder of a 70-year-old Indian origin woman in her home.

Mehrotra Shashi was found lying motionless in her 12th-storey unit at Block 791, Choa Chu Kang North 6, on Monday. Zin Mar Nwe, 23, who was working for Shashi’s household, is accused of killing her, the Strait Times reported.

Nwe appeared via video-link from Central Police Division, where she is being held in remand. She is remanded for psychiatric evaluation for a week and has been denied bail, the report said.

According to pilice, the alleged murder was discovered after they received a call, requesting for assistance at the flat. When officers arrived at the place, they found Shashi lying motionless. Paramedics pronounced her dead about 30 minutes later.

Nwe will be back in court on July 4. She will face death penalty if she is found guilty of committing the murder.

Kink San Nwe, a sales agent who lives in nearby Block 792, said: “Things don’t usually happen in this neighbourhood, so I was surprised. I didn’t believe there was a murder at first.”
