Muslims of Nizamabad staged a ‘dharna’ and ‘rasta roko’ at Gandhi Chowk after Friday prayers demanding immediate action against those suspected to have desecrated the grave of a woman in a graveyard on Bodhan Road. The protestors were lathi-charged by the police resulting in injuries to several persons.
Youth of the community squatted on road on the busy Gandhi Chowk and refused to withdraw their protest resulting in traffic jam. Police wielded their lathis to disperse the protesters and took as many as ten persons into custody.
Police sources said that Faheemunnisa Begum, 82, who died on Thursday, was buried late in the afternoon. When the family members returned with relatives to perform some rituals, the grave appeared to have been dug. Suspecting that the body might have been shifted, the family members lodged a complaint with the police.
Police registered a case under Section 297 of the IPC and began investigations. However, in the course of inquiry, police found that Faheemunnisa’s body was not removed. But, some pieces of an old body buried close to her grave were found spread around.
